How to beat the January Blues Forever

Saturday, January 04, 2020

How to beat the january blues forever, new year 2020, mandy charlton, photographer, blogger
At some point during the festive season, it's not unknown to wake up with a sudden feeling of anxiety or just feeling out of sorts, blue or weepy. January is like the evil twin of Christmas, it's the antithesis to joy, it's the return to routine, the return to boring food, messages in the media that we're not enough and failed resolutions. Here's the thing though, maybe it's Christmas which has a dark side, we're convinced we should eat all of the wrong foods, we're lulled into thinking it's better to be indoors for days at a time and even worse, sometimes with the most toxic people you've ever known (aka family).
I'm trying to love January more, I'm resetting my body today with some chicken, brown rice and green vegetables, it will taste healthy and I will curse the fact I'm not eating cake approximately 23 times but I made a promise to myself and to my liver consultant that I would lose at least 10% of my body weight before I see her again at the end of March, It's probably going to be a big ask to have gotten that far but I'm willing to give it a try. A few friends are joining me on the "Grumpy Girl's Lifestyle". We called it that because we'll be super grumpy if anyone asks if we're on a diet when we're actually just on a quest to change our lives and maybe you can join in too?
The concept is simple, get outdoors more, up your exercise, we're not talking Mo Farrah type marathons just moving a bit more. When it comes to food, something I struggle with because I love carbs and cake, it's just about cutting down a little, especially on cake and carbs, I've done it before and I know I have the power to do it again. I'm not going mad though, I'm not going on any crazy cleanse plans or doing sugar-free (which worked but wasn't at all sustainable on the long term). I'm just having a word with myself and generally trying to be a little more restrained than my festive self when we all say "Ah, sod it, it's Christmas" (for at least 3 months in my case).
Routine isn't a bad thing either, I go back to work on Tuesday and although my office isn't actually that far away from my bed I am making it my own personal resolution to get dressed every day, preferably before lunch as I'll be honest, Holly Bobbins also prefers an earlier morning walk before she gets down to the serious business of snoozing, beagle style. My mental health and anxiety can generally be at it's worst over the winter with the lack of light and the quietness of my photography business but I've decided that this year I'll enjoy the slower pace of life and I shall try to get outdoors as often as possible as being out in nature, once I actually force myself out of the cosy warmth of my house, is actually really good for me and more importantly for my mind. When I went into the festive season this year I was dreading it, I thought I would crash, burn and have an awful time but for some reason, I really enjoyed all that entailed and even had my best New Years Eve I can ever remember and my first without any alcohol at all, in the past, I've tried to endure alcohol but given that it feels like poison the moment I have 1 sip, this year I probably had 1 bottle of Champagne across the whole of the festive season and I'm happy with that, I am happy being a non-drinker! Whatever plans you have this year or however blue you're feeling right now try to remember that routine isn't a bad thing, the good foods are actually the bad foods in disguise and more than anything else, that you are good enough, you are always good enough, even if you don't believe that you are. Here's to 2020 and just being the same but better!

2016, Final Thoughts and Looking Forward to 2017

Saturday, December 31, 2016

So, we're here, the very last blog post of 2016 and as I've already mentioned in my 2016 reflective post, it really has been quite a year.

As I leave this year to enter the next one I am happier than I can ever remember, Looby said earlier today that I had become fun mum this year, you cannot understand just how much of a robot I was, I was honestly high functioning, lived what I thought was a happy life but laughter is such an important thing, it relaxes, it binds us all together, it brings about shared experiences as we as a family all laugh together and then the kids laugh at me and then I laugh at, well everything really.  I have become as Mr F says, a giggler in a box.

Around this time every year I come up with my focus word for the next year and whereas last years was adventure this coming year I have a big goal because my word for this year is Joy, on a selfish level I want to have joy in my own life but this is not so much about what I want to receive because in 2017 I want to bring joy to other people's lives, I am genuinely setting out my goal for next year to make other people feel happier, less lonely, more joyful, positive smilier and enriched.

Friends for dinner on Mondays was a rousing success in 2016 and I'm planning to keep this going but I also want to add a monthly Friday night dinner party as I loved our Christmas party so much, it's just great when all of your friends are in the same place and your kids and their friends and you are all getting along having a shared experience.

I know I'm going to continue to travel and have adventures, more than ever before I want to get myself out there, exploring new places, meeting new people and just bringing some sparkle into people's lives.

It's taken me so long to get to this happy state that I'm in now and I want to truly share that with the world.  I rarely make resolutions, I just promise myself that I will try to continue to be brilliant each and every day.  I hope for no tears of sorrow and only tears of absolute and utter joy.

I am sure that the year ahead will hold challenges but I am ready for each and every one, I have beaten many challenges in my life, my work, parenting and business thus far and I know what I am capable of, yes I'm sometimes a little absurd and ridiculous but I have guts, I am independent, stubborn and strong, I keep those in my heart protected at all times and if anyone should try to hurt them I'll fight for them with all of my will.

I am truly excited for 2017, I think it could be the most amazing year I have ever lived so lets come back and reassess this a year from now and see if it's exceeded even my wishes and hopes.

Strap yourselves in for the most exciting ride yet, 2017, I am coming to get you!

New Years Resolutions

Wednesday, December 31, 2014

I've never been one for complicated lists of new years resolutions which I'll promptly give up or forget about 3 days into January, usually my one resolution is to continue to be fabulous dear reader, both in life and in business!  I'm sort of half joking as that sounds a little arrogant so maybe the plan has always been to continue to be happy although I sort of fell off the log on that one too this year even if it wasn't intentionally.

I really wanted to have a list of goals for next year but I think that the first one has simply got to be to make it through the next year as unscathed as possible, divorce after all isn't exactly a joyful thing, looking at the positives in that though means being able to really move on and start again.  I always think each year should have your own personal buzzword, just one word to focus on and pull you back in times of need.  My word for 2015 is renewal or rebirth, it's the start of a whole new phase in my life, one which will hopefully end in completion and by that I mean that I end up complete, it's not the same completion as in Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro! it's a very good book/movie if you haven't read/watched it but it's definitely not a happy story!

If you're a regular reader of my blog you'll know that each week we have tasks to do on our family to-do board, usually they're all written by Looby as she comes up with much more interesting ideas than I ever could!  This week, number 5 on her list is Write an inspirational quote, so here goes :-

It is only once you have experienced the dark that you can truly appreciate the sunshine on your face.

So back to those New Year resolutions -

1. Try not to be bitter
2. Try always to be positive
3. Try to learn from the past to move forward to the future
4. Try always to appreciate the sunshine on my face
5. Continue to surround myself with wonderful friendships
6. Love my friends and let them know how much I appreciate them
7. Don't let toxic people upset me in business or personal life
8. Be Happy and smile every day
9. Allow myself to make mistakes without beating myself up about it
10. Sparkle!

So, what's your buzzword for 2015 and what goals are you going to set yourself, remember that you should think about these things and don't just chuck a list of things together which you know you'll fail at by this time next week, it's good to write them down and if you don't get it right first time, don't get cross at yourself, no one is perfect after all!

Whatever you are doing tonight to celebrate the passing of the year and the birth of the new one make sure when midnight comes that you are happy and content, the birth of a new year is not the time to get grumpy!
